Brand New Artillery

Posted by empirestateexpress On March - 29 - 2010

We’re thrilled to introduce our new drummer, Derrick Martens, who will be making his ESE debut at our upcoming Silvie’s Lounge show. Scarcely a month ago, Derrick joined us in the studio as a last-minute candidate for auditions, then summarily schooled the competition, some of whom had been practicing the material for days. A few weeks in, he’s already bringing a new dimension to ESE’s material. Those of you planning to join us on the 7th might want to bring an airbag–you won’t know what hit you.

In the meantime, check out Derrick’s bio on the Band page and get amped.

Saturday Morning Listening

On this unseasonably cold day in March here’s “The Snow Leopard” by Shearwater. The piano line is similar to “Pyramid Song” by Radiohead but that’s where the similarities end. It’s just a shame that no original music video appears to have been made for this song. I think they’d make hay of it. Also a duet between Jonathan Meiburg and Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons would be a staggering thing of beauty. Just my two cents.

On the Docket

A Shot in the Arm

With a new year ahead, a new EP under our belts and a new drummer behind the kit, it’s only right that we throw some new tunes into the mix as well. Here’s a small preview of the shiny newness we’ll be rolling out over the next few shows:

Originals
“Ethanol” is one of those tunes that has been batted around the rehearsal room so many times it’s hard to believe that it hasn’t yet made it to the stage. That’s a shame too because it’s unlike anything else in the current setlist–a slinky, brooding slow burner that could be an alt-country cousin something off Fiona Apple’s “When the Pawn…”

“Patterns” has been a staple of Chris’s occasional acoustic sets and will soon be getting a full arrangement. It’s in the vein of Ryan Adams’s “Winding Wheel” and would probably make a nice chaser to “Ethanol.” Expect to hear it at our upcoming Horseshoe Place gig with the Lost Cartographers.

We’ve also been hammering through a new original with the working title of “Skin and Bones” that we can’t wait to debut. If Spoon and Vampire Weekend had an evil lovechild it might sound like this.

Covers
Bruce Springsteen, “Atlantic City”; Spoon, “I Turn My Camera On”; The Knack, “Good Girls Don’t”; Elvis Costello, “You Belong to Me,” Elliott Smith, “Between the Bars”

Lovely, catchy song by The xx. Sounds better on vinyl than digital, but that’s just one man’s opinion. Enjoy!

Those Lyrics You Wanted

Posted by empirestateexpress On March - 10 - 2010

Chris onstage at Bottom LoungeDon’t get us wrong, we feel that people who sing along to our songs are entitled to do so with whatever words they please. Also, the various “re-imaginings” of ESE’s lyrics have been a deep vein of entertainment (favorite so far: “all up in my heart/are you Wings tonight?/butterfly”). At the same time, we realize that some completists among you may actually want to know what Chris is drawling about as you listen, so we have included song lyrics with each of the recordings on the Music page–just look for the “Lyrics” button on the player. Ponder them and prosper. Also, please reply or email with any interpretations of your own and we may just do something clever with them.

Fare Thee Well, Mike

There have been murmurs. There have been rumors. Mostly there have just been the usual sighs and rumblings as Mike has it out with another Steve Gadd opus. The truth is that in a short while our good friend and nimble drummer Mike Bruder will be leaving Empire State Express as a full-time member to better prepare for and pursue session work around town.

Mike helped found ESE back in 2008 and has given us clockwork precision since then, most recently appearing on our debut EP, Land Speed Record and a few upcoming singles by Paris Schutz Band. As a friend he’s not really going anywhere, but we’ll miss his artillery and ninja reflexes in the rehearsal room as well as onstage. Empire State Express will have other great collaborators, but there can be no exact substitute.

In fact, we’re happy to report that an excellent new drummer has joined the band and will be bringing his own brand of alchemy to Empire State Express as we continue to grow. More details on this to come. In the meantime, keep an eye on that Michael Bruder; he will go far.
